You know, in the past few months I've heard so many people say that Jason has to be a child of one of the Big Three because he's important. Why in Hades would someone think that? Honestly, all of the gods are equally important, both in myth and in the world of Camp Half-Blood! So, I'm here to give you the 411 on why this theory (Jason has to be a big three demi) is completely bogus, becaue I'm seriously tired of repeating myself.
First off, we're going to start out with a few facts.
* There are more Minor gods/goddesses than there are Major gods/goddesses
* Most of the Minor gods were around before the Major gods.
*The Minor gods are all related, usually cousins, to the Major gods.
* While Major gods may have domains over which they rule (i.e. Zeus' domain is the sky), the minor gods have specialties within a choosen domain (i.e. Boreas is a WIND god) or they are the domain itself (i.e. Aether is the Upper Air.)
Now, in the Percy Jackson Series the minor gods and their demigods played a major role in the events that took place. Let's list them.
* A son of Nemisis (Ethan Nakamura) was sent to battle Percy to initiate himself into Kronos' Army. After that HE was sent on a major quest to not only steal the Sword of Hades, but to use the sword to bring Iapetus (a fearsome Titan Lord) back from Tartarus. In the end, he enabled the decision that saved Olympus. He did all of this for his mother.
* Persephone, Queen of the Underworld and Goddess of Spring, is the wife of Hades. She commisioned the sword of Hades, the weapon that could've lost the Olympians the war.
*Hyperboreans anyone? These guys are the immortal sons of Boreas. Remember how much strength they brought the army of Kronos? If memory serves me correctly, they even froze Clarisse, one of the greatest heroes of her generation!
*Most of the army of Kronos was made up of demigods that went unclaimed! Why were they unclaimed? Oh, I don't know (note my sarcasm)...maybe because their immortal parents were minor gods who didn't have a cabin at Camp Half-Blood!
*Morpheus, you remember him don't you? Yeah, I thought so. He's considered a minor god, the god of dreams to be exact. Well, he put a barrier around New York City that forced every mortal within it to fall into a deep sleep. If not for the inginuity and courage of one Annabeth Chase, Morpheus would've (via his sleep spell) ended the life of the New Delphic Oracle, Rachel Elizabeth Dare.
*Aeolus and the Winds (Anemoi: Boreus/Boreas, Zephyros, Notos, and Euros) protected Mt. Olympus, effectively keeping any who tried to take it by air away.
* Hecate, although her magic did not effect Olympus, played a part in the attempt to raize Olympus. She was not alone, though, many of the Minor gods joined Kronos and, if not for Percy, Ethan, Luke, and Annabeth, they would've turned the tides and brought victory to the Titans.
* Do you remember the title of the last Percy Jackson book? The Last Olympian. Now, do you remember who the last olympian was? Hestia, who long ago gave up her throne on Mt. Olympus so that Dionysus could have one. Although she is sometimes considered an Olympian, for all intensive purposes, she is a minor deity. If it wasn't for her, and you know I'm right, Kronos would've taken Olympus. She was/is the protector of the hearth, the keeper of mighty Olympus. She alone was the catalyst for everything that happened for the side of good, for Olympus.
Now for some Minor god importance in myth!
*Styx is the Goddess of Hatred and the river that bears her name. In the first battle of the Titans and the Olympians, she came to the aid of Zeus and the others. Because of her actions, Zeus made her the Keeper of Oaths. All oaths that are sworn in Myth and in the world of Camp Half-Blood are sworn on/by her. She is very powerful because, essentially, she holds the keys to the destruction of man. For we all know that most people break a promise or swear false at least once, and all of those are kept by Styx. She must punish them, so, it must them be assumed that she is a very powerful goddess.
*Horkus is the god and personification of oaths. As you can tell by the bullet above, oaths are very powerful, thus making him powerful.
*The Fates. Yeah, you heard me, they're goddesses. As their english name says, they are the goddesses of fate, yet they are not aknowledged for being powerful goddesses! They decide the fate of everyone, they decide when someone will be punished, when they will fall in love, when they will have kids, when they will die, etc.
*Eris is the Goddess of Chaos and Dischord. Every time something messed up happens, according to myth, that's her. When a party gets cashed, that's her. When war breaks out for no good reason, blame her. Well, anyway, as we all know, everyone lives with a degree of Chaos in our lives. Also, Eris is the Goddess of Competition, and the world would be nothing if there wasn't competition.
*Eileithyia is the goddess of childbirth. She has the power to bring a child into the world and the power to stop labor and effectively keep a child from being born. Tell me that's not important and powerful. Without her, there would be no demigods, there would be no mortals with which the Gods could make demigods, and there wouldn't be any gods for that matter!
*Thetis was a Sea Goddess who affected many myths. When the gods rebelled against Zeus and bound him in unbreakable chains she was the one who came up with the solution. When Hephaestus was thrown from Olympus by Hera, Thetis was the one who took the infant in and cared for him. It was her who made her son almost invincible, for she knew the ways of immortality. She was loved by both Zeus and Poseidon, but they dumped her because her son was supposed to be mightier than his father...they didn't want anyone taking over so they kicked her to the curb. Not to mention that according to some versions of the myth, it was her wedding to Peleus that proved to be the catalyst for the Trojan War. How can she not be an important goddess?
*Deimos and Phobos. What more can I say about them. They are Fear and Terror, both of which have their grip on every person in the world. Everyone has a fear and when something bad happens, people are thrown into fits of terror. We all live with both and deal with it daily. Some people are scared of the dark, some of being alone, others are scared of ducks (don't ask) or cats. It doesn't matter what we fear, but we all fear something, even if it is only fear itself.
There are other Minor deities I could mention, other stories I could tell, but the message is clear. The Minor gods are just as important and just as powerful as the Major gods. They control the aspects of every day life giving them power that is too great to deny. I don't see how anyone could read this article and continue to say that the only way that a demigod could be important is to belong to a Major god. I know I'll get it for this article, but if you have something rude to say, keep it to yourself. I only speak the truth. Anyone who would like to add more to this, leave a comment. Be on the lookout for the ever important Minor gods and goddesses when The Lost Hero hits bookshelves on October 12. If you would like more information on the series, head over to the link for the series. Please feel free to browse through the Fan Fiction, Articles, and disscussions. Until the next article, this is Amphitrite the Minor (yet important) Sea Goddess, signing off.
