The Hunger Games Question

Why is it called the HUNGER Games if the main focus of the Games is not really hunger?

I mean, sure, everyone struggles with hunger in the arena, but isn't the point of the Games to show the people that they are weak and powerless? When people describe the book, they sometimes say, "it's a book where children kill other children" Ok, so why isn't it called the Killing Games? No one says, "it's a book about kids who get hungry in an arena"

hollistergurl said:
Well, hunger is a main part in the arena... most people die from hunger or lack of water, because you need to know your resources. Plus, the whole book has references to hunger-- in the beginning, when Katniss talks about being hungry and hunting and before Peeta gave her the bread. How District 12, you can starve in safety. How she notices all the food in the Capitol on her way there. How she notices food in her backpack and is relieved. How she gets food for Peeta when he's injured, having a little feast. How they look for food after the thunderstorm. The Hunger Games is not just about the arena-- it's about a survival for hunger. You're right, no one says it's a book about kids who get hungry in the arena, because that's not really the point, I guess. The Hunger Games is probably named this because of the struggles for hunger not just in the arena but everywhere else in Districts and how the Capitol takes advantage of it.

I know but...like...in the arena. The Games. Most people don't die from hunger. Most died by murder. I see how everyone in the districts are starving, I know that.

Because part of being weak and powerless is being deprived (by the Capitol) of food, and having to survive. The Hunger Games "help" people that don't hunt in the woods like Katniss by giving them tessera by putting their name in more than an extra times. Also, if they win the Hunger Games their District receives an abundance of food once a month. But then of course that stops after a while and they go back to hunger.

It's called The Hunger Games because if you need food then you put your name in the bowl and if your name gets drawn you compete agenst others and the winner wins food and other things for their district. And that's what Suzenne Collins decided to call up.

Because the people who control the food are the most powerful like the careers with the supply's. It is mentioned that the years the supply's are destroyed is the years the poorer districts win. Also it comes from most people having to battle hunger on a daily basis and by winning the hunger games you will be able feed yourself and your district will have food for a year and it could be a metaphor for the careers hunger for fame and glory

Because that's what Suzanne Collins wanted it to be titled.

Hunger/starvation is one of the main reasons that the children die in the arena. Not just by killing eachother. Not everybody in the area can stock up on food. They fight on empty stomachs. Starve to death. That could be a part of it.

MOST PEOPLE DIE BY MURDER, PEOPLE. HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THE FIRST BOOK ARENA DIED FROM HUNGER? None. Zip. Zilch. They came close, but none died.

There's still 73 other games. -.- And, referring back to the first statement, that's what Suzanne Collins wanted it to be titled. A title does not make a book. I's the chapters between the cover that does.

I agree. What a dumb title. Maybe Suzanne Collins chose it because it sounds intriguing and mysterious or something. Who knows? Also maybe because Katniss is from District 12, "where you can starve to death in safety."

The hunger to survive, the hunger to win the Games and return home to a better life. It could be used in different ways, the title. Katniss must hunt for food, food isn't passed around in Katniss' district or any of the others like it is in the Capitol. Katniss herself must hunt for her own food in the woods before the 74th Games.

Trying to outsmart the animals to kill them, like a game. Or, like I said before, the hunger and the need in to win the Games. So the tribute can go back home and say they've done something to make their district a little prouder. To go back home and know they've made things easier for their family. The hunger to win at all costs. And it's a catchy title. Adds a bit of mystery to the book and what it's about. I don't think it was meant to be taken so literal. You can get a lot of explanations out of the title if you think of them.

The Hunger Games means: a type of games that includes starvation, a hunger to kill/muder or the idea of saying that the Capitol reins over the Districts of Panem.
The main aim of the Hunger games is that the Districts know who's Boss and that they must attend this Games whether they like it or not.
These games are gory, but that's how The Author planned the story to be in 100 years time in America/Panem as know then in the future.

It has nothing to do with what happens during the games, it's about how after, if you win these games, you never go hungry for the rest of your life. Who's point of view is the book from? Katniss. Has she been hungry all her life? Yes. What is she really fighting for? Yes, Prim & Rue but also for food. That's what everyone is fighting for. The lifetime of glory, power, money and FOOD.

Okay listen people who live in districts especially 12 are poor and they most of the time die of starvation in their districts so in order from starving the children will enter their names more for tesserae so they cam live which can makes them more likely to be called at reaping thus the name hunger games.

It's about the Capitol showing other kids (and adults)in Distrects that they are defenceless and theres nothing you can do to stop it. They can take the kids captive and force them to train. The reasonwhy they call it the Hunger Games, if because they put a bit of 'hope' in each distrect that one of their tributes will win and that one little (or big) person will get FOOD.

I always thought that the reason for it being the "Hunger Games" was because, of how mainly all the districts are really poor. I think it was stated in the book that which ever district won the "Hunger Games" would be supplied with grain for the year, and the losers would carry on living in starvation.

It could refer to emotional hunger instead of physical, like how the capital has a 'hunger' and show excitement at seeing the district children fight and kill in the arena. Or the 'hunger' to what the Capital thinks of as justice for the first rebellion. This could have affected what the name of it was.

Good point it really makes you think lol! But in Panem you get food for putting your name in like if u remember how gale got put in a lot to feed his family and katniss told prim dont take any food from them ( the Capitol) gale will bring you game. Thay are all starving and in the games they have to get their own food and the same at home like how katniss is handy with a bow and arrow so she can shoot squirrel rabbit etc. So the games are one thing. and hunger is one of the main focuses in the book and movie. The Hunger Games!!

OH. MY. GOD. Has ANYONE here read Mockingjay?
In Mockingjay it clearly states that The Hunger Games, translated in Latin, is 'Panem et Circenses', bread and circuses. The Districts provide food and resources for the Capitol,as well as entertainment with the 24 kids that get reaped each year.
Also, as someone said before, it's also about tesserae. You need grain, (food:hunger) you put your name in the reaping (entertainment:games).
And as someone else pointed out as well, for the rest of your life (except for those in the 3rd Quarter Quell) you are guaranteed a life where you will never have to go in the reaping again. Free ticket to the Capitol every year, mentoring, living in the Victors Village, Parcel Day, the list goes on.

I think that it's called The Hunger Games because people in the Districts are so poor, each time a child is entered in The Hunger Games, they receive grains. Children from each District fight each other to the death until only one remains. The child that wins receives food for its District, and wealth for themselves.

The Hunger Games got its name because Snow wanted to show all of Panem that he had control, but that he was also a generous man. He promised the Districts food surplus if their tribute won. Each District, though some more fortunate than others, could use more food. So, the teens are forced into a deadly battle for food for their District. Winning also assures many families that their children will not need tesserae and will not have to enter their name more than necessary.

So, basically, the Games in the Capitol's eyes are Games of honor. In the eyes on Careers, its the same. In the eyes of say, someone from the Seam, it's a death-match for food.

Hope this helped.

Many reasons make the name. One of them being in Mockingjay Katniss states that the Hunger Games translates into Panem et Circenses which in english is bread and circuses. Meaning the districts have to supply the capital with resources and entertainment with the hunger games. Showing why snow said it was a fragile system.

Another reason Is that if you and your family are struggling with money you put your name in more times and get a years supply of grains and oil. Showing they will fight for food giving the Capital entertainment.

In the first book it states while they were training that most people will die from hunger and diseases. Even so it did not happen so much the 74th and 75th hunger games there still was many more in the past.

The victor gets to 'bathe in riches of your wildest dreams' meaning food, money, a house to sleep in at night and to live. This gives the supply of hope in order for the Hunger games to work, if they did not have hope they would not have their entertainment in the capital.

When the districts started to rebel Snow was worried when they rebelled they would not have their resources in the capital made by the districts, after all the government is a fragile thing.

Another reason most would miss is it also implies the ongoing love in the books. Katniss is caught between Peeta and Gale not knowing which to chose. She chooses based on a scene in Catching Fire on the beach where her and Peeta are in the water. He tells her why she has to live and they kiss. She said she felt a hunger when she was kissing Peeta. This carries on to Mockingjay near the end when she chooses Peeta and how the hunger is back. It symbolizes the ongoing romance and how she came to a conclusion.

Many things imply the name "Hunger Games" you just have to be able to tell reality from illusion, "Real or Not Real?" ~Hrnmfjec
